Mike Cachuela Visits CalArts

FEBRUARY 25, 2011: Director Mike Cachuela stopped by his Alma mater, CalArts, and gave a two hour presentation to students, discussing his career path as well as his approach to animation, film-making and acting, showing examples of his animated and live action films, from his collegiate portfolio to his professional career.  A student in Character Animation at CalArts, Mike’s credits include: Coraline, FernGully, Toy Story, The Life Aquatic, The Incredibles, Corpse Bride and Ratatouille.

Joan Gratz Releases New Claypainted Short

FEBRUARY 16, 2011: Joan Gratz, an accomplished director, artist and animator,  recently premiered her new short film, Kubla Kahn. The short is an animated interpretation of a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797. His “vision in a dream” was composed under the influence of opium. Joan won an Oscar® in 1992 for Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase, images of the human face are subtly transformed to communicate the graphic style and emotional content of key artworks of the 20th century, creating an animated history of art. She is currently represented by LAIKA/house for commercial work.

FEBRUARY 10-26, 2011: LAIKA served as a Champion Sponsor of the 2011 Portland International Film Festival (PIFF), directly supporting PIFF’s Short Cuts series: six programs featuring 42 memorable snapshots—animated, live action, documentary, experimental and narrative works.

LAIKA/house “Frito Lay Dips” Spot Nominated For Annie Award

DECEMBER 6, 2010: The CG spot for Frito Lay Dips, And Then There Was Salsa, was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Television Commercial. This is LAIKA/house’s first nomination for a 100-percent CG spot. Director: Nicholas Weigel.

LAIKA At Center Stage In Ottawa

OCTOBER 20, 2010: LAIKA was a major participant at the 2010 Ottawa International Animation Festival.  LAIKA took part in the festival’s Animation Celebration and also sponsored the popular Salon des Refusés, a two-night event that showcases and screens films rejected by the Ottawa festival jury.   At the Animation Celebration, held at the National Gallery of Canada, LAIKA presented an inside look into the world of Coraline and a screening of Moongirl.  More than 800 children attended.

Animation Workshops Highlight Science Festival In St. Louis

OCTOBER 16, 2010: Georgina Hayns and Brad Schiff led two animation workshops and presentations of the creative process for more than 50 kids, ages 10-15, at SciFest ’10 International Science Festival in St. Louis.  The workshop was held on October 16.   Students learned the intricate details of how the Coraline puppets were constructed and also had a chance to animate short sequences.  The entire piece was shown at the conclusion of each workshop.  The event also featured behind-the-scenes content from the making-of Coraline and production puppets from the movie were on display. Summit Offers Insights Into 3D Technology, Availability

SEPTEMBER 15, 2010: Brian Van’t Hul participated on a panel called: “The Drivers in Creative: 3D Content and Creative Story Telling; The Post Avatar Generation” at the Hilton in Universal City on September 15. Panelists shared the highs and lows they often encounter with their new 3D tools. In addition to Brian, participants included: Steven Poster, President Of International Cinematographers Guild; Brian Rogers, Producer, Godzilla; Buzz Hays, Executive Stereoscopic 3D Producer, Sony Technology Center; Frederik Du Chau, Writer/Director; Jeff Maynard, Head of Post Production Technology, The Weinstein Company. Coraline The Featured Installation In Yakima

SEPTEMBER 24, 2010: A Coraline installation appeared at the Central Washington State Fair in Yakima September 24 – October 3 as part of the traveling State Fair Pop Culture Exhibit. The Coraline display included early character designs from Shane Prigmore, Tadahiro Uesugi and Dan Krall.

Coraline Opens Festival In Greece

SEPTEMBER 30, 2010: Coraline was the opening film at the Animasyros 3.0 International Animation Festival and Forum on Syros Island, Greece.  LAIKA/house Designer/Director Gesine Krätzner attended the festival and led a presentation on animation design.

“Surfrider” Competes at Ottawa

OCTOBER 20, 2010: The Surfrider Foundation’s ‘Rise Above Plastics’ has been selected for the Official Competition in the Promotional Animation Category at the Ottawa 2010 International Animation Festival from October 20-24.

The spot, which was directed by Aaron Sorenson, was one of 89 films selected for competition from a field of 2092 entries.
