LAIKA/house Animates Planters’ Peanut Butter Doug

JUNE 24, 2011: The ongoing Planters Mr. Peanut campaign recently introduced a new character to the mix – “Peanut Butter Doug.” Animated by LAIKA/house, the dubious and adventurous stunt double of Mr. Peanut — made his debut in a 44-second, stop-motion online video on the Mr. Peanut Facebook page on June 23. Identical to Mr. Peanut with the exception of a goatee and aviator sunglasses, “Peanut Butter Doug” is the nut sent in to take the “crushes” for Mr. Peanut and champion Planters Peanut Butter.

Three Commercial Spots, Short Film Accepted Into Annecy

MARCH 10, 2011: Three commercial spots animated by LAIKA/house were nominated for competition at the 2011 Annecy International Animated Film Festival in the Advertising category.  The spots are: Frito Lay Dips And Then There Was Salsa; The Surfrider Foundation Rise Above Plastics; and Planters Holiday Party.  Academy Award® winner Joan Gratz‘s new short film, Kubla Khan, also was accepted into competition. The clay-painted piece is an animated interpretation of a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797.  Held in Annecy, France, the festival runs June 6-11.

LAIKA, LAIKA/house Highlight Community College Animation Exhibit

MARCH 8-APRIL 22, 2011: Artwork and sets from Coraline to Frito Lay Dips were on display at a Clackamas Community College exhibit called: “Process: The Hidden Art of Animation.” The exhibit ran from March 8-April 22 at the Alexander Gallery in the Niemeyer Center.  Coraline puppets — including Coraline, Real Mother, Real Father and several Scottie Dogs — were on display next to Coraline’s Real World and Other World bedroom sets.  In addition, the show featured LAIKA/house design images from the CG spot And Then There Was Salsa for Frito Lay Dips.  Clackamas Community College’s Oregon City Campus is located at: 19600 Molalla Avenue in Oregon City, Oregon.

LAIKA/house “Frito Lay Dips” Spot Nominated For Annie Award

DECEMBER 6, 2010: The CG spot for Frito Lay Dips, And Then There Was Salsa, was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Television Commercial. This is LAIKA/house’s first nomination for a 100-percent CG spot. Director: Nicholas Weigel.

LAIKA Helps Bid Adieu to Oregon Governor Kulongoski

DECEMBER 17, 2010: Outgoing Governor Ted Kulongoski was honored at the annual meeting of the Oregon Governor’s Office of Film and Television. A section of Coraline and three clips from HOUSE commercial spots for Frito Lay Dips, M&M’S and Planters were key parts of the video montage, which featured the films and broadcast work that was produced in Oregon since 2003, during his two terms in office.

“Surfrider” Competes at Ottawa

OCTOBER 20, 2010: The Surfrider Foundation’s ‘Rise Above Plastics’ has been selected for the Official Competition in the Promotional Animation Category at the Ottawa 2010 International Animation Festival from October 20-24.

The spot, which was directed by Aaron Sorenson, was one of 89 films selected for competition from a field of 2092 entries.

LAIKA/house Sweeps Up Five Telly Awards

AUGUST 2, 2010: The winners are:

SILVER – Oregon Lottery “5,000 Watt Sweater” for “Use of Animation” and “Art Direction.”

SILVER – Missouri Lottery “Ginger-pult” for “Use of Animation” and “Use of Humor.”

BRONZE – Earth2O “Keep it Real” for “Use of Animation.”

The Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web. Silver is the highest honor.

Aaron Sorenson directed “Ginger-pult” and “Keep it Real.” Eric Wiese directed “5,000 Watt Sweater” and Patrick Long illustrated.
